Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that orthopedic surgeons use to visualize and treat problems in a joint. In arthroscopic surgery, the orthopedic surgeon makes a small incision in the patient's skin, then inserts pen-sized instruments containing a small lens and a lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures in the joint. The light is transmitted via fiber optics to the tip of the arthroscope inserted into the joint. By attaching the arthroscope to a miniature camera, the surgeon can see inside the joint through this very small incision instead of the larger incision required for open surgery. A camera attached to the arthroscope displays an image of the joint on a video monitor and allows the surgeon to look over the knee, for example. This allows the surgeon to see the cartilage, ligaments and under the patella. A surgeon can determine the extent or type of injury and repair or repair the problem if necessary.
